The Challenge

Arthritis Research UK has spent 50 years funding research into a condition that affects more than 10 million people nationwide.

At e3, we helped the charity to complete a seismic shift in emphasis, away from pure research to a people-first strategy. More than ever, delivering support and advice to those living with arthritis is at the heart of the approach and digital innovation is driving it. People with arthritis are benefitting directly from a new suite of digital products and services, including AVA, a ground-breaking AI virtual assistant powered by IBM Watson brought to market in under 6 months from its initial conception.

Throughout the ongoing programme, quick wins build confidence. Collaborative working develops skills and raises expectations. Incremental and ongoing digital improvements mean the previously impossible has become possible. AVA is the perfect example of this. One of the first genuine machine learning applications in the UK, it’s changing the lives of more and more people every day.
